FUNCTION:  The Men’s Basketball Intern will support the planning and directing of the Men’s Basketball program including but not limited to overall student-athlete instruction, recruiting, game, and practice planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist in managing the Men’s Basketball program under the direction of the Head Coach.
  2. Instruct student-athletes on the rules, regulations, fundamentals, equipment, and proper skills and techniques of the sport.
  3. Instruct student-athletes in game strategies and philosophies.
  4. Assist Head Coach in developing and implementing practice and training plans.
  5. Monitor academic success of student-athletes through study programs, etc.
  6. Evaluate and recruit qualified student-athletes in accordance with College standards.
  7. Assist in administrative duties including schedules, travel arrangements, meals, game management, equipment ordering, scouting, evaluation procedures, etc.
  8. Work cooperatively with personnel at the institution and within the athletic department.
  9. Attend athletic department meetings and activities.
  10. Represent Defiance College positively in interactions with the community, recruits, families, alumni, media, and general public.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree required and previous high school / college coaching experience preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  The individual must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be able to interact effectively with a diverse group of constituents and be a positive representative of Defiance College and the athletic department.  Knowledge of, and compliance with, specific NCAA III rules and reporting guidelines that relate to this position are required.  Must possess a strong commitment to student-athletes and be able to adhere to and promote a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism and respect.  This individual must be able to maintain confidentiality, practice discretion with personal information, and be able to travel and work non-traditional hours.  In addition, the individual must be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.  This individual must be able to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. A valid driver’s license is required.
