Filegar added to Union U Men’s Basketball Staff

Union University men’s basketball head coach David Niven has announced Josiah Filegar as the new assistant coach for the program. Filegar filled the position held by Easton Bazzoli who accepted the same position at Gannon University.

Niven said, “We are excited to welcome Josiah to our program. His ability to connect with people will serve him well as he recruits and develops our players on and off the court. His passion for player development will truly be an asset to each one of our guys and they will get better because of it.”

Filegar joins Union after spending two seasons as the assistant coach at Trevecca Nazarene University from 2021-23. Prior to his time at Trevecca Nazarene, he spent the 2019-21 seasons at Liberty University as a student manager.

Filegar said, “I am humbled by the opportunity to join Coach Niven’s coaching staff here at Union University. I am eager to join this established program and pursue a shared mission of using basketball as an avenue to impact lives for Christ. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Filegar is a 2021 graduate of Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management. He added a Master’s in Organizational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene in 2023. While at Liberty, the men’s basketball team made appearances in the NCAA D1 Tournament in 2020 and 2021 after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference in both seasons.

For a large portion of his life, Filegar has been a part of a ministry in Belize. For eight summers in a row starting in the eighth grade, he participated in ministry that consisted of medical, construction, vacation Bible school, and discipleship. He was also able to lead a basketball camp for youth.

Filegar played basketball and baseball in high school while being homeschooled. He is a native of Mechanicsville, Virginia, and is the son of David and Sharon Filegar.
