The University of Texas at Arlington and men’s basketball head coach Scott Cross have agreed in principle to a four-year contract extension through the 2019-20 season. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
“We are excited to announce that we’ve agreed to a contract extension with Coach Cross,” UT Arlington Director of Athletics Jim Baker said. “The job Scott has done this season is second to none. The future of the program is bright, and we look forward to our student-athletes continuing to excel in the classroom and winning championships on the court in the years to come.”
Cross is the all-time leader in coaching victories for the men’s basketball program. The Mavericks are 175-137 under his watch, which includes a 22-9 record this season going into the Sun Belt Conference Championship. UTA finished the regular season with a 13-7 record in the Sun Belt, setting a program record for victories since joining the league three years ago.
“I am very thankful that President Vistasp Karbhari and Mr. Baker have offered a contract extension,” Cross said. “As a UT Arlington alum, I take great pride in this program and will be relentless in my efforts to turn UT Arlington Basketball into a powerhouse program. I am also very thankful to my staff and student-athletes because a head coach is nothing without their efforts. We have a very special group of student-athletes and coaches that share the same vision that I have for UT Arlington Basketball.”
The 22 wins this season are the second-most all-time at UTA. Of the top six records in program history, Cross has coached four of those teams, including the top three. Cross has led the Mavericks to a postseason tournament three times, including the program’s lone NCAA bid in 2008. UTA had one postseason appearance prior to Cross becoming head coach in 2006.
