Head coach Dan Hurley has announced the addition of two new members of the Rhode Island men’s basketball staff – Daniel Anthony and Tyron Boswell – for the start of the 2016-17 season.
Boswell joins the Rams’ staff as the director of basketball operations. He arrives in Kingston after spending the previous seven years with the Expressions Elite youth basketball program. Most recently, Boswell was the director of basketball operations where he oversaw all aspects of organization’s on and off-court operations, including coaching, individual instruction, player development, fundraising, and equipment. He advised student-athletes through the recruiting process and helped create an academics program to assist members of the Expressions Elite program prepare for college.
“Ty possesses high-level experience in grassroots basketball from his time with Expressions Elite,” Hurley said. “He helped build Expressions from the ground up and played a major role in their success and development. Ty is a motivated individual and his passion for basketball will only benefit our program.”
While with Expressions Elite, Boswell was an integral part of the player development efforts for several professional and high-level Division I players, including Rhode Island junior guard Jared Terrell. Boswell also was key in the development of NBA draftees Ricardo Ledo and Alex Oriahki as well as close to 40 Division I players including current college standouts Abdul Malik Abu (N.C. State) and Cane Broome (Cincinnati). From 2013-16, Boswell also served as the head boys basketball coach at Concord Academy in Concord, Mass.
Anthony joins the Rhody staff as the primary athletic trainer and sports medicine staffer for men’s basketball after spending the 2015-16 season with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. In that role, Anthony worked closely with the entire medical staff with evaluations, pre-practice and pre-game treatments and post-game therapy. Additionally, he served as the liaison for the visiting teams for home games at Oracle Arena. During the lead-up to the 2016 NBA Draft, Anthony helped gather anthropometric data and medical assistance during NBA Draft individual workouts.
“We are excited to add another key member of our staff with NBA experience,” Hurley said. “Daniel’s time with the Golden State Warriors – one of the most innovative franchises in sports – along with his experience in the college ranks will prove beneficial in the day-to-day care of our student-athletes.”
Prior to his time with the Warriors, Anthony spent time on the athletic training staffs at the University of Missouri (2014-15), working with the football and softball programs, and Texas Tech (2012-14), where he worked with the Red Raiders’ football and men’s basketball programs. A native of Kansas City, Mo., Anthony earned his bachelors degree in exercise and movement science from Missouri State in 2011 and his masters of science in athletic training from Texas Tech in 2014.
Additionally, Daniel Marshall – the lead strength & conditioning coach for the men’s basketball program for the past two seasons – was elevated to the director of basketball performance. In this expanded role, Marshall will work with both the men’s and women’s basketball programs at Rhode Island and will have primary responsibility for the strength & conditioning programs, with an emphasis on basketball-specific training, nutrition, and recovery needs.
