Lindsey named Head Basketball Coach at NAIA Loyola New Orleans

A familiar face is returning to the Loyola University New Orleans Men’s Basketball bench, as Assistant Vice President of Athletics Brett Simpson announced the hiring of Trey Lindsey as the program’s 20th head coach on Thursday.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Trey Lindsey back to Loyola,” Simpson said. “He had a significant impact on our success leading up to and including the national championship. He has extensive experience recruiting to high academic Catholic institutions while being a part of highly successful basketball programs. We look forward to having him, Maddie, and Zoe back uptown.”

Lindsey returns to Loyola after serving as an assistant coach under Stacy Hollowell during the 2017-18 season, and he teamed back up with Hollowell this past season in the assistant and recruiting coordinator role at the University of New Orleans. While at Loyola, Lindsey recruited a few pieces of Loyola’s 2021-22 NAIA National Championship team, including four-time NAIA All-Americans Myles Burns and Zach Wrightsil.

“I am honored to return to Loyola University New Orleans as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach,” Lindsey said. “I want to thank Brett Simpson, Jesse Zabal, and Dr. Alicia Bourque for their trust and for allowing me to return to this storied program and elite university. Eight years ago Stacy Hollowell hired me and allowed me to play a part in building the Wolf Pack program into a national champion. My dream is to hang another banner in The Den, and with the help of the Loyola community, I will work tirelessly to do so.

At UNO, Lindsey was the lead assistant and oversaw the recruiting efforts, day-to-day operations and scheduling. Prior to his return to New Orleans to coach at UNO, Lindsey was the head coach at his high school alma mater Bowie High School in Austin, Texas, for two seasons. At Bowie, he controlled every aspect of the 70-plus student-athlete program, including budget, booster club, coordinating travel, scheduling and camps.

After his season at Loyola, Lindsey spent four years at his college alma mater, St. Edwards’s University in Austin, Texas, where his teams made two trips to the NCAA Division II national tournament, including the program’s first-ever Sweet 16 appearance, and won a Heartland Conference regular season and tournament championship. The team was 86-28 during his stint with the Hilltoppers, as Lindsey played a pivotal role in recruiting.

Lindsey began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at St. Edwards during the 2016-17 campaign after his collegiate playing career ended one season prior. As a two-time captain, he started all 60 career games for the Hilltoppers, averaging 8.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He started his college playing career at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where he appeared in 45 games for the Warhawks with 14 starts. In high school, he helped Bowie High School win two district championships and one regional title as a three-year letterman.

He graduated from St. Edwards with a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology in 2015 and a Master of Science in Leadership and Change in 2017.

Lindsey currently lives in New Orleans with his wife Maddie and daughter Zoe, and he’ll become Loyola’s fifth men’s basketball head coach since the University restarted athletics in 1991.

Details on a reception to meet Coach Lindsey and his family will be announced at a later date.
