Coastal Carolina’s Cliff Ellis Wins 700th Career Game

Coastal Carolina head coach Cliff Ellis earned his 700th career win on a NCAA Division I sideline as the Chanticleers completely dominated rival Winthrop in an 82-63 win this past weekend.

Ellis notched his 166th win as a Chanticleer to mark his 700th in a career that has spanned five decades. Ellis, who has led 10 teams to the NCAA Tournament, won 171 games at South Alabama, 177 at Clemson and 186 at Auburn.

Over his 40-year coaching career, Ellis has guided his squads to 10 NCAA Tournaments and earned 13 National Invitation Tournament bids. Ellis’ teams have advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament three times: once with Clemson in 1990 and twice with Auburn (1999 and 2003).

Ellis is a member of three halls of fame after entering Clemson’s in 2013. He was already part of the Mobile (Ala.) Area Sports and Cumberland College halls of fame. He was also named the recipient of the 2014 Gene Bartow Award, which recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to the game, on and off the floor.
