Casey Kaufman Named Malone Men’s Basketball Head Coach; Interim Title Removed

Malone University Athletic Director Charlie Grimes announced today that the interim tag has been removed from the title of men’s basketball head coach Casey Kaufman and that he will serve at the helm of the program going forward.

Kaufman joined the Pioneer staff in the spring of 2015 and was named Malone’s interim head coach in August following the resignation of former head coach Tim Walker.

“Casey has done an outstanding job leading our basketball program through the coaching transition and we are very confident in his ability to not only lead our team to success on the floor, but to also help develop our student-athletes both academically and spiritually,” said Grimes.  “Casey may be young, but his basketball pedigree is undeniably impressive.  He knows and teaches the game with excellent precision, and he has earned the job through hard work and humility.”

Prior to joining the Malone staff, Kaufman spent the previous three years as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the College of Wooster, helping the Fighting Scots to three consecutive NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances and a combined record of 73-21. His coaching resume also includes significant camp experience, having previously served as co-head trainer/director of FULL40 Basketball Training – a program conducted at various local schools, spanning Ashland, Delaware, Holmes, Richland, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties.

“I’m excited,” said Kaufman. “This is a great opportunity here at Malone.  I really believe in what this University represents and we are going to work very hard to have success both on the floor and off it.  Right now, I am most concerned with our current group learning to compete and win at a high level.  We’re excited about this program’s future, but what is most important at this time is laying down a good foundation.”

Kaufman graduated from Heidelberg University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in History.  During his time at Heidelberg, Kaufman was a three-year letter-winner on the HU men’s basketball team, serving as a team captain during his senior year.  He also earned Heidelberg’s 2012 Prugh Prize, recognizing the male student-athlete who demonstrates excellence in leadership and performance.
