Kelvin Starr Named Head Men’s Basketball Coach at TMC

The Master’s College has announced the hiring of Kelvin Starr as its new men’s basketball coach. Starr comes to The Master’s College with a wealth of basketball coaching experience on the prep, club, and collegiate levels.

A native of Sydney, Australia, Starr is currently the executive pastor at Seven Church San Diego in Lakeside, Calif. Along with his ministry responsibilities (March 2014 – present), he also served as the director of operations for the Top Gun Basketball Academy in San Diego from 2013 to 2015.

Commenting on Starr’s hiring, TMC Athletic Director Steve Waldeck said, “We are looking forward to Kelvin joining our team of dedicated head coaches and staff in our Athletic Department. His experience as a collegiate head coach and as a student-athlete in the GSAC and the NAIA provides instant credibility to lead our basketball program. We are committed to supporting and partnering with him and his family as they transition into our community over the next few months.”

Starr’s coaching career began 20 years ago when he was hired as the assistant basketball coach at San Diego Christian College from 1996 to 2002. During that six-year period, the Hawks won the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) national title twice (1997, 1998) and made it to the NAIA Final Four as the nation’s 14th-ranked squad in 2001.

In July of 2002, Starr was named head coach at San Diego Christian and proceeded to craft a 104-60 record over the next five years. In that window, he coached the Hawks to another NCCAA national crown (2004), Top 25 NAIA rankings in 2005 and 2006 and NAIA National Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007.

In addition to the tournament appearance, the 2006-07 campaign was highlighted by the program’s first-ever GSAC regular-season championship, a 24-6 record and a No. 7 national ranking.

The performance of Starr’s teams over the years have also earned him personal recognition in the form of NCCAA Coach of the Year honors in 2004-05 and GSAC Athletic Director of the Year kudos in 2006-07.

Leaving San Diego Christian in the summer of 2007, Starr took over the coaching reins at Christian High School in El Cajon, while also assuming responsibilities as director of Sports and Recreation Ministry at Shadow Mountain Community Church.

He served in those two roles until 2013, when he took over as director of operations for the Top Gun Basketball Academy.

Excited about this new opportunity, Starr commented, “I would like to thank Dr. MacArthur and his leadership team. My family and I are truly honored and blessed to be part of The Master’s College community. I look forward to mentoring these young men and continuing the great tradition of the men’s basketball program.”

Starr graduated from San Diego Christian where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1996. He and his wife, Heather, have three boys.
