Wild day yesterday, expecting more of the same today. Here are a few quick hitters to get it going…
Very early at Murray State, but some names making the rounds include current Racers assistant coach Tim Kaine, and Morehead State head coach Preston Spradlin.
I mentioned Yale’s James Jones on Sunday at San Diego. Other names out there are former Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing, former Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak, and UCLA assistant Darren Savino.
A few interesting names early at La Salle include Hartford head coach John Gallagher (a Philly native and former La Salle assistant), and former St. Joe’s head coach and current Michigan associate head coach Phil Martelli (a Philly legend). 7/5 odds that a Philly guy will be the choice.
Rumors swirling about Kevin Willard’s new staff at Maryland. Sounds like he’s bringing DMV native Tony Skinn (assistant at Ohio State), Seton Hall associate head coach Grant Billmeier (if he doesn’t get the SHU job), and also hearing that former URI head coach David Cox is in the mix (another DMV guy).
Name that I’ve heard at George Washington include Yale’s James Jones, Miami associate head coach Chris Caputo, former Louisville interim head coach Mike Pegues, and a current Big Ten assistant.
The early leader to replace Chris Jans at New Mexico State is current NMSU associate head coach James Miller. He killed it as the head coach at New Mexico JC going 77-23 in 3 years, and has also been an assistant at North Texas and Omaha. Should have more indication here of what’s going to happen in the next 24-hours.
Some extremely early names at Chattanooga include current Mocs assistant Tanner Bronson, Ole Miss assistant Win Case, MTSU assistant Wes Long (a former Chattanooga assistant), and Wake Forest assistant Brooks Savage (another former Chattanooga assistant. More names as this search gets going.
UCLA assistant Michael Lewis’ name is making the rounds at Ball State. The Indiana native who played at IU for Bob Knight got an endorsement from his current boss Mick Cronin last week. Also hearing that current BSU associate head coach Linc Darner is in the mix. He’s the former HC at Green Bay who won a D2 National Championship at Florida Southern while going 219–72 (.753) in his 9-years there. Also, at least two Big Ten assistants have tried to get involved.
It sounds like Mineral Area College assistant Tim Walsh will join Steve Hawkins staff at D2 Quincy University. The long-time Idaho State assistant had previously worked for Hawkins at QU in the late 1990’s.
Word on the street is that Zoom interviews are this week at D2 Anderson University (SC), with on-campus interviews happening next week. A bunch of D2/NAIA head coaches involved.
