Western Texas College is very pleased to welcome Robert “Tre” Walton III as the new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach.

“Tre has been very successful at different levels of basketball,” said Matt Hardy, the WTC Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “He is a relentless recruiter and has a proven track record of being value-added to every staff he has been a part of.”

Walton spent the last two seasons as Graduate Assistant Coach for the Dallas Baptist University (DBU) Men’s Basketball team. Walton’s second season saw the Patriots post a record of 17-11 with a third-place finish in the Lonestar Conference. The team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

Walton’s role grew tremendously with the Patriots. His responsibilities included recruiting, leading film sessions, scouting conference opponents, and continuing to improve the program’s player development plan. Again, the Patriots saw multiple players earn all-conference awards including players on all three all-conference teams. Walton helped develop sophomore forward Cameron Kahn into a First-Team All-Conference selection; the NABC also named Kahn to the All Region Second Team. Walton took over the team’s academic support, and the Patriots posted its highest team GPA in several years during the Fall 2021 semester.

In his first season, the Patriots posted a 17-5 record and advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional Semifinals. The season saw multiple Patriots earn all-conference awards. Walton proved instrumental in the development of Chandler Jacobs and Ricky Lujan. LSC selected Lujan as Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-Conference. Jacobs finished as the LSC Defensive Player of the Year and also earned First Team All-Conference.  The NABC also named Jacobs a D2 All-American.

Prior to joining the Patriots, Walton coached for four years as an assistant at John Jay College, New York City.

While at John Jay College, Walton spent his first two seasons handling player development, film, and scouting reports. Prior to the start of the 2018-19 season, Walton took over as the team’s recruiting coordinator for the Bloodhounds. He handled all nationwide recruiting efforts including 2 First-Team All CUNYAC players, and the 2020 CUNYAC Player of the Year. He has recruited players from New York City, New Jersey, Florida, and upstate New York.

Walton’s final season at John Jay ties the best regular-season record for the Bloodhounds. The team finished with a 20-5 record and a 13-1 conference record. The team also made the ECAC DIII Men’s Basketball Championship tournament for the second consecutive year.

Walton earned his Master’s in Leadership from Dallas Baptist University and his Bachelor’s in Sport Management from St. John’s University.

“I am excited to have Tre here in Snyder,” added Hardy.

“I know he will be a great addition to our basketball program as well as our institution.”
