Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks has announced a seven-person search committee to help determine the next head men’s basketball coach for the Bulldogs.
That group consists of Vann Pettaway, Frank Sillmon, Rose Powell, Dexter Williams, Dr. Geremy Cheeks, Edward Egerton III and Myles Parker.
Vann Pettaway
The all-time winningest coach in program history, Pettaway led A&M men’s basketball for 25 years from 1986-2011. During that time he oversaw not only the most successful run during the NCAA Division II Era but also led the program to the Division I ranks and the only NCAA Tournament appearance at that level in 2004-05. Pettway played for the Bulldogs from 1978-80.
Frank Sillmon, Co-Chair
A 2007 Alabama A&M Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Sillmon played for Pettaway from 1987-89, earning a pair of All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) First-Team selections. He averaged 20.3 and 23.0 points in his two seasons and led the program to an impressive 55-9 overall record. As a senior he scored a single season program record 736 points and was named one of A&M’s five greatest players in the book ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia (2009).
Rose Powell, Chair
Head volleyball coach Rose Powell brings extensive international and collegiate coaching and playing experience to the committee, having won a Silver Medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and has led the Bulldogs to multiple Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles. In her 24 years as a head coach she has compiled more than 450 wins and multiple titles following her playing career at the University of Houston.
Dexter Williams
A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Williams brings a wealth of knowledge as a member of Alabama A&M Athletics since 2013 and a former NCAA Division I men’s basketball coach. He served as an assistant coach at Birmingham Southern from 1999-2003 and Tennessee Tech from 2003-06, helping to develop those programs to a championship level before serving as head coach for a pair of state championship teams in Madison County High School and Bob Jones High School.
Dr. Geremy Cheeks
Cheeks has been a member of the Alabama A&M Health Science and Human Performance Department for more than six and a half years, serving as an assistant professor. He was recently named Faculty Athletic Representative and has extensive experience working in athletics and with A&M students looking to pursue a career in various sport-related professions.
Edward Egerton III
Since joining Alabama A&M in February 2021 as Assistant Director of Compliance, Egerton has played a key role in the compliance efforts of the program on all levels. He brings more than six years of compliance experience at the NCAA Division I level, including five-plus at his alma mater Delaware State.
Myles Parker
A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Parker returned home to play the past two seasons of basketball for the Bulldogs’ after playing at Southeastern Conference (SEC) power Auburn for two years. In his time with A&M he appeared in 43 games and helped lead the program to the SWAC Tournament Semifinals in 2022, their first such trip since 2014. He also played a significant role in the team’s NCAA Division I program record tying six-game win streak this past season and has served as a team leader.
