Sonnen Named Duluth Assistant Coach

The University of Minnesota Duluth Men’s Basketball Team has named Marc Sonnen as it’s next Assistant Basketball Coach, who will be joining the team for the upcoming 2022-23 season. Sonnen comes from the University of Northern Iowa where he was a Graduate Assistant for the past two seasons.

“We’re extremely excited to add Marc to our staff. His experience at Northern Iowa as a player and coach put him in a great position to help our program continue to grow on and off the court.” Head Coach Justin Wieck said. “As a Tartan, MN native, Marc’s ties to the area will continue to help us attract some of the best players in the Twin Cities area. Marc has an infectious personality that will help our players & program find the next level. We can’t wait to get him to Duluth!”

Previously, Sonnen played four seasons at the University of Northern Iowa where he reached the sweet 16 during his freshman season. Sonnen also ranks Top 10 at UNI in games played, career wins, 3PT made in a season, 3PT made in a career, 3PT percentage in a season and 3PT percentage in career. From there, he played overseas for the Beyer Giants in the Pro-A Germany league in Leverkusen, Germany.

Sonnen’s coaching experience began at Tartan High School where he was a volunteer coach, where he assisted with scouting, player development and defensive breakdown. From there, he went back to his alma mater where he was the Video Coordinator, where he was in charge of video for both players and coaches, film set up and breakdown for practices and games, scouting opponents, and highlight tapes and player videos. Sonnen served this role for one season before becoming the Graduate Assistant for UNI, where he was in charge of film breakdown, scouting, and on court workouts and practice help. Sonnen graduated with a degree in Sociology and a Minor in Coaching, and earned his Master’s in Community Health and Recreation.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to join Coach Wieck’ staff and honored to be a part of the outstanding men’s basketball program they have built here at the University of Minnesota Duluth.” Sonnen said. “Coach Wieck and his staff have done a great job with their players and having the chance to work and learn from them was something I couldn’t pass up on. Getting to work with high character players, who not only excel on the court but in the classroom and off the floor, made this decision very easy. Coach Wieck has led this program to the national level, and I can’t wait to help keep that success going, both on and off the floor.”
