Colgate University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Langel completed his coaching staff with the hiring of Damon Sherman-Newsome ’15 as the program’s director of operations.
Sherman-Newsome played three years for the Raiders and graduated from Colgate ranked tied for ninth all-time in career 3-point field goal percentage (.368), 10th in 3-point field goals made (140), and 13th in 3-point field goals attempted (308).
“I am grateful to Coach Langel for giving me an opportunity to come back to Colgate as a member of the coaching staff,” Sherman-Newsome said. “It’s an honor and a pleasure to be able to serve the student-athletes at Colgate in this capacity. Seeing the program achieve at the highest level gives me a great sense of pride and lets me know that my time here as a player meant something. I look forward to being a part of Colgate’s continued success. Go ‘gate!”
A native of Anchorage, Alaska, and member of Colgate’s 1,000-point club, Sherman-Newsome finished his collegiate career with 1,030 points, averaging 10.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists per game. He also added 49 steals and 18 blocked shots in three seasons.
“As a player, Damon had a critical role in helping us establish Colgate Basketball as a program that could compete for championships,” Langel said. “His hardwork and commitment to his craft helped him develop into a First Team All-Conference and professional player. Having him join his teammate Pat Moore on our staff will be extremely valuable. Damon’s knowledge for what it takes to achieve as a student and an athlete on this campus and his pride for Colgate Basketball will serve our current and future student-athletes well. I can’t wait to personally welcome Chanel, Zhuri, and Oriana to our Colgate Basketball Family.”
Sherman-Newsome was Colgate’s leading scorer as a senior, averaging 14.7 points per game. He posted 28 double-digit scoring contests, five of which were 20+ point scoring performances, on his way to garnering All-Patriot League First Team and NABC All-District 13 Second Team honors. He netted at least one 3-pointer in 29 of Colgate’s 33 games in 2014-15.
The former Raider standout scored a career-high 30 points in a victory over Holy Cross during his senior campaign. He also earned the team’s Bob Duffy-Tucker Neale Most Valuable Player award after guiding the Raiders to a second place finish with a 12-6 Patriot League record.
Sherman-Newsome graduated from Colgate in 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Anthropology. He will move to Hamilton with his wife, Chanel, and their two daughters, Zhuri and Oriana.
