The Hillsdale College men’s basketball team has completed its coaching staff for the upcoming 2023-24 season with the addition of Evan Morrissey as an assistant coach, effective immediately.
Morrissey joins returning assistant John Cheng under first-year head coach Keven Bradley, and brings solid experience from a decade spent as an assistant coach to his new position.
“”Evan is a great addition to our program and someone that I have known for many years,” Bradley said. “He is a loyal, hardworking and enthusiastic coach that emphasizes fundamentals and attention to detail, while working hard to build relationships with both current and future student-athletes. His attitude and infectious personality will enable him to immediately impact our program positively.
“Evan’s character and selfless approach towards teaching and helping student-athletes will play an important role in furthering the strong culture of excellence and brotherhood here at Hillsdale. We are fortunate to have Evan as a part of Hillsdale College and our program.”
He comes to Hillsdale from Culver-Stockton College, an NAIA school in Missouri, where in two years as an assistant he helped restore the Wildcats to competitiveness after back-to-back five win seasons. His first campaign at Culver-Stockton included a nine-win improvement over the previous season and the just the program’s second .500 mark in the past eight seasons.
Morrissey helped develop four All-Heart of America Conference honorees in two seasons, and was part of the longest winning streak in school history to start the 2021-22 season.
Prior to Culver-Stockton, Morrissey spent two years at Wheeling University in West Virginia, playing an important role as an assistant in taking a team picked to finish last in the Mountain East Conference to a fifth-place finish and MEC Tourney berth during his time there.
Morrissey got his start as a coach at his alma mater, Wisconsin-Parkside, at the NCAA DII level, first as a student manager with the team from 2013 to 2016 before being promoted to a student assistant for the 2016-17 season, and then brought onto the staff as a full-fledged assistant coach in 2018-19.
At Parkside, Morrissey worked under Bradley, who was an assistant for the Rangers under head coach Luke Reigel during that time frame, and played a part in Parkside’s breakthrough as a men’s basketball program, helping the Rangers win 112 games in five seasons with Parkside, as well as five Division titles in the GLVC and GLIAC, while making four NCAA DII Tournament appearances.
Along with his time as a collegiate coach, Morrissey also worked at the high school level early in his career, serving as an assistant coach at Seymour Community High School and also coaching with the Wisconsin Crusaders, an AAU program based out of Northeast Wisconsin.
“I would like to thank Coach Bradley and (Hillsdale College Athletic) Director John Tharp for this special opportunity to join Hillsdale College and its prestigious basketball program,” Morrissey said. “My relationship and experience working with Coach Bradley has been crucial to my professional development as a coach over the last ten years, and I’m very excited to be a part of his first staff as a head coach.
“I look forward to helping build on what Coach Tharp has built here at Hillsdale and helping Hillsdale continue to compete for championships.”
Morrissey graduated from University of Wisconsin-Parkside with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and a certificate in coaching. Morrissey also received a master’s degree from Wheeling University in Business Administration.
