The Harper College men’s basketball program will have a new leader on the bench this year; LaMario Richards has been named the new head coach of the Hawks.
Harper is excited to bring in a passionate coach with 11 years of experience coaching in the Midwest and 10 years coaching in the Chicago land area.
Richards’ most recent coaching stint was at Olive-Harvey in Chicago, IL, as an assistant since 2021. He helped guide them to a 21-8 record as well as an undefeated 10-0 conference record in the City Colleges of Chicago Athletic Conference. Richards was also the recruiting coordinator for the Panthers.
When Richards was asked why he was interested in Harper, he said he couldn’t let the opportunity pass by:
“Harper College has a strong academic reputation, a rich history of winning in every sport, a commitment to excellence and a great culture. The opportunity to be a part of such a great institution of higher education was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up and the interview process led me to believe that Harper College would feel like home!”
Richards seeks to change the culture at Harper and create a winning atmosphere, stating:
“My desire is to create a culture and an atmosphere that is conducive to winning on and off the court. That starts with holding student athletes accountable in all things, especially academically. Maintaining a positive attitude at all times and competing every day. That will give this team a chance to obtain micro achievements and turn them into major achievements fostering the expectation of winning.”
Richards will bring his high level of commitment, passion, intensity, dedication, and hard work to Harper and the college is excited to have him!
