Gordon State College hires Schiefen as new Head Basketball Coach

Gordon State College has named Greg Schiefen as the new head basketball coach.

With 11 years of collegiate experience, Schiefen boasted a career total that includes over 20 wins spread across 8 seasons. He joined Highlander Nation from Chipola College in Marianna, Florida, where he served as an assistant coach for one season. During his term, he assisted the team in achieving a 29-5 record, won the Panhandle Conference regular season championship, secured a Florida State Tournament championship and earned a No. 6 overall seed in the NJCAA Tournament.

Prior to his time at Chipola College, Schiefen was an associate head coach for four years and assistant coach for two years at Georgia Highlands College in Rome, Georgia. He also held coaching positions at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania; Alfred University in Alfred, New York; and Corning Community College in Corning, New York.

“I am excited for the opportunity to rebuild and lead the men’s basketball program to new heights,” Schiefen said. “I am thankful for the vision and support from Dr. Green and Dr. Moore and the Highlander community. I believe together we can accomplish our goals and much more.”

Schiefen’s responsibilities have spanned basketball program development, managed practices and training sessions, oversaw academics and housing, ensured NJCAA/NCAA eligibility, crafted offensive game plans, scouted and recruited, supervised staff, provided academic support, coordinated marketing and social media, and designed conditioning and weightlifting programs.

Career highlights as a collegiate coach included leading his teams to GCAA regular season titles in 2017, 2021 and 2022, and consistently achieving Top 25 NJCAA Division I rankings for seven consecutive years, peaking at No. 3. Schiefen also secured victories in the MAC Freedom Tournament in 2016, an NCAA Tournament appearance the same year, and an Empire 8 Championship appearance in 2015.

Schiefen’s recruiting track record included five All-Americans, 15 players ranked in the top 100 by JUCORecruiting.com and 16 All-Conference players. He helped 25 players sign with Division I programs and over 18 players with Division II teams. Additionally, Schiefen recruited the No. 1 ranked power forward in JUCO, facilitated one player receiving NABC All-Star recognition, and guided five players into professional basketball careers.

Schiefen holds a bachelor’s degree in sports management with a minor in athletic coaching from SUNY-Brockport in Brockport, New York where he played for four years and was a part of a SUNYAC Championship, NCAA Tournament appearance and three Eastern College Athletic Conference appearances. He obtained an International Sports Sciences Association certification in fitness training and was inducted into the Notre Dame High School Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball.
