Cal State Fullerton Head Coach Dedrique Taylor and the men’s basketball program announced the addition of Hassan Nizam to the coaching staff as a new assistant coach.
Nizam comes to Cal State Fullerton after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan where his main responsibilities were recruiting student-athletes, game preparation, and on-floor coaching.
“Coach Nizam gives us an immediate infusion of great energy,” Taylor said. “He brings the perfect combination of experience, knowledge and work ethic this program is looking for. I am excited to bring him on board as he helps us bolster every aspect of our program.”
Before joining the coaching staff at Central Michigan, Nizam spent the previous two years as the head coach at Macomb Community College in Michigan (2021-23). He guided the Monarchs to a national championship appearance, an NJCAA Region XII Championship, the program’s first MCCAA championship and MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship, and a 53-13 two-year record.
In 2022-23, Nizam led Macomb to the NJCAA Division II National Championship Game, the best finish in program history and second NJCAA Region XII Championship (first since 2016-17). The Monarchs posted a single-season high 28-8 record overall, the program’s first MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship since 1992-93. He also coached the program’s third NJCAA Division II All-American, Aidan Rubio. The team was never ranked lower than No. 11 all season in the NJCAA Division II National Poll.
In 2021-22, Nizam led Macomb to its first MCCAA Championship in program history in his first season. He coached the program to its first MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship since 1992-93 and first outright Eastern Conference title since the 1983-84 campaign after leading the squad to a 25-5 overall record and 13-3 MCCAA Eastern Conference.
Overall, Nizam helped send a total of 12 players to four-year NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II colleges and universities. He coached two NJCAA Division II All-Americans, including Aidan Rubio and John Ukomadu, the program’s first NJCAA Division II All-American since 2017-18.
For his efforts, he was crowned the 2023 NJCAA Region XII District C Coach of the Year, the 2022 MCCAA Coach of the Year, MCCAA Eastern Conference Coach of the Year, and the Men’s Junior College coach of the year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
Prior to taking over the Macomb men’s basketball program, Nizam guided Roseville High School to a 59-28 record with three district championships and one regional crown in four seasons from 2017-21. First time in 38 years, he led Roseville to a league championship. He guided Roseville to the MAC Red/White tournament title in 2018, then shared the MAC Red regular season championship and won the school’s first regional championship in 2019.
Prior to his stint at Roseville, he served as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2016-17.
He also has extensive AAU coaching experience and has led several programs at Hype Athletics in Dearborn Heights, Mich. He spent three years with the Nike EYBL team “The Family” AAU program as its Under-16 head coach and Under-15 assistant.
Nizam began his coaching career after graduating from Fordson High School in Dearborn, Mich. He served as an assistant coach for the Tractors. As a player at Fordson, Nizam earned second team all-city honors after his senior season in 2011-12. He served as team captain and averaged 10 points per game and was a top-notch defender for the Tractors.
