Maryland men’s basketball head coach Buzz Williams has officially announced the addition of Josh Chambers and TJ Ryan to his staff. Chambers will serve as the Director of Process, while Ryan will be the Director of Basketball Strategy and Analytics.
Chambers first worked with Williams beginning in 2016 at Virginia Tech as a graphic designer before being elevated to Director of Recruiting Operations. He spent the previous six seasons in College Station with Willaims as the team’s Director of Creative. Chambers helps implement Williams’ cultural philosophy on and off the court, creating content used to help educate players and staff on leadership and relative team topics, and overseeing facility design and signage ensuring alignment with the program’s core values.
His role touches every corner of the program — from in-game strategy, player evaluation, roster construction and game scheduling, to mental performance curriculum and leadership development. If it affects the culture, the players, or the staff, Chambers builds a plan to strengthen it.
At the core of his work is a simple idea: help the team adapt and evolve without losing the foundation that holds it together. Chambers writes lesson plans, leads cultural initiatives, designs content for team meetings and practices, and keeps leadership lessons alive in every environment the players and staff encounter.
One of Chambers’ signature projects is the design and delivery of the program’s “Quote Shirts” — a set of 12 custom shirts distributed annually within the team. Each shirt teaches a life lesson, extending the program’s impact far beyond basketball.
Chambers also oversees the design of recruiting materials and contributes to Coach Williams’ @TeamCoachBuzz social media platforms.
“Josh brings one of the most unique skill sets I’ve seen in my coaching career. He’s a problem solver at every level of our operation. Because of how his mind works, it’s often essential that his perspective involved in any high-leverage decision we make,” said Williams. “He’s a clear thinker with a creative eye, and has quickly become a trusted confidant for me, our staff, and our players. His impact touches every part of our culture — from our in-game strategy to our player’s mental performance, helping us adapt and evolve without losing the foundation that makes us who we are. I’m fired up to have him joining us here in Terpsville.”
Ryan joined Williams’ staff at Virginia Tech in 2018-19 as a graduate manager before moving on to Texas A&M for the previous six. The past four seasons he served as the program’s Director of Scouting where he oversaw the team’s video analysis software, managed team analytics, and oversaw recruiting content.
At Maryland, Ryan plays a comprehensive role in the program’s success. He collaborates with Assistant Coach Lyle Wolf to coordinate the team’s offensive system and supports Coach Williams in designing and executing special teams situations, such as baseline and sideline out-of-bounds plays, after-timeout actions, and late-game strategy. In addition to practice planning and implementation, Ryan helps lead the team’s physical, digital, and video playbook development.
A strong communicator and relationship-builder, Ryan is deeply involved in recruiting strategy and execution. He evaluates high school and transfer portal prospects, produces custom film edits and content, and plays a central role in shaping the program’s recruiting vision. His ability to connect with student-athletes and their families—combined with a deep understanding of the game—makes him a valuable asset on the recruiting trail.
Player development is another core strength. Ryan helps design and implement individualized development plans, drawing from film analysis, practice data, and advanced tools such as HD Intelligence and NOAH Analytics. He collaborates closely with coaches and players to improve skillsets and performance, blending analytics with on-court instruction to maximize growth.
“TJ is the smartest person on our staff and has quietly turned his role into a real competitive advantage. When it comes to analytics and strategy, there’s no one in the country better than TJ Ryan,” said Williams. “He takes pride in being a trailblazer in every area he touches. His ability to manage critical parts of our program — video, practice planning, analytics, and even some operations — not only takes an immense stress off me, but it allows our entire organization to operate at an elite level.”
Maryland is coming off a 27-9 campaign in 2024-25 which saw the Terps reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2016.
