Ty Amundsen, Assistant Coach
One of the nation’s top high school head coaches is joining the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball coaching staff. Ty Amundsen will serve as an Assistant Coach for Arizona State. He arrives in Tempe after spending the past eight seasons as the head coach of the Millennium High School boys basketball program.
“The addition of Coach Amundsen is exciting for our program,” Coach Hurley explained. “He established himself as one of the premiere high school coaches in the country and brings a lot of coaching experience to the table.”
Amundsen joins a staff that already includes assistant coaches Jerrance Howard and Nick Irvin as well as special assistant to the head coach Ty Larson, who each have extremely deep connections at the prep and AAU level. Amundsen’s addition only bolsters a group that is equipped to recruit some of the nation’s top prospects. Combine that with the presence of Final Four MVP and First Round NBA Draft pick Bobby Hurley and it results in one of the most respected coaching staffs in the nation.
“It is a true honor to be coaching at Arizona State University and to coach alongside Bobby Hurley,” Amundsen mentioned. “To learn from Coach Hurley and grow both as a coach and a competitor. I’m ready for the challenge.”
During his tenure at Millennium, he turned the Tigers into a powerhouse, helping them emerge as one of the state’s top programs. That included four state championship game appearances and eight regional championships. He guided Millennium to the 2024 AIA Open Division state championship game and followed that up with a semifinal appearance in 2025. This past season, Amundsen’s team was the lone Arizona school that didn’t lose a game in the highly-competitive Section 7 tournament hosted annually at State Farm Stadium, bringing some of the country’s best prep teams to The Valley.
Millennium was a combined 17-35 in two seasons prior to Amundsen taking over. After going 13-13 in his first season, he orchestrated a historical turnaround, leading the Tigers to seven consecutive winning seasons. That included five seasons of 20+ wins (10 wins in one season due to shortened COVID season), highlighted by back-to-back 28-7 and 25-5 campaigns. He was named region coach of the year each of his eight seasons at the helm of Millennium. Prior to his stint in Goodyear, Amundsen enjoyed successful stops at St. Mary’s (Phoenix) and Estrella Foothills (Goodyear). While at Estrella Foothills, he engineered three-straight AIA 3A State Championship runs. With the Wolves, he was a three-time Arizona high school coach of the year and six-time region coach of the year.
Amundsen has been a part of the development of several of the state’s top boy’s basketball prospects over the past decade. Four Arizona High School Gatorade Player of the Year award winners have played under Amundsen. He has sent players to college programs all over the country, many that have also gone on to play professionally. Some of his former players include former Miami Heat guard Corey Hawkins (UC Davis/ASU), current Denver Nuggets forward and 2024 NBA Draft 1st Round pick DaRon Holmes (Dayton), former Boise State standout Marcus Shaver (playing professionally in Argentina), Oregon State four-year starter Kyle Jeffers (playing professionally in Philippines) and many more.
Born in the Bay Area of California, Amundsen played at Newark Memorial High School, where he won a MVAL Championship and ended the season with the No. 1 ranking in Northern California. After high school, Amundsen attended Chabot Community College for two years before moving on to Fresno Pacific University. He was a key contributor to the GSAC Championship run for the Sunbirds during his first season. Amundsen averaged 15.8 points per game (2nd on the team) and 4.7 assists per game (1st on the team). That same season the Sunbirds also qualified for the NAIA National Tournament, where they advanced to the Elite 8. In his two years with the Sunbirds, the team set school records for wins. To this day, Amundsen is still Fresno Pacific University’s record holder for free throws made in a game, netting a perfect 13 of 13 in the GSAC Championship game.
Amundsen will be joined by his wife, Diane, in Tempe. Their daughter Mia is currently a student at Arizona State studying Sports Management. Their son JT, who was coached by his dad Ty at Millennium, is a freshman guard on the Northern Arizona Men’s Basketball team.
Bobby Hurley Jr., Director of Analytics and Strategy
Following a four-year playing career with the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program, Bobby Hurley will now make the transition to staff member. He is following in his father, uncle, and grandfather’s footsteps in pursuing a career in the coaching profession.
“I am very appreciative of the opportunity to learn from a great staff, especially Coach Hurley,” Hurley remarked. “Playing in the program for the last four seasons has helped prepare me to help future Sun Devil Men’s Basketball players.”
Hurley will serve as the Director of Analytics and Strategy with Arizona State Men’s Basketball. In the new-age of college basketball, analytics has become more-and-more essential to the operation of the program. Hurley will be in charge of implementing analytic-based strategy in the game plan preparation process.
Having played the past four seasons for Hurley at Arizona State, the younger Hurley has a unique perspective on how the program functions. Hurley saw action in 31 games during his career and was a part of the 2022-23 team that made a run to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Nevada in the opening round. His high basketball I.Q. allowed him to already be involved in game-planning during his time as a player. His recent background in the system and connections with the current players on the roster will be a significant benefit for the coaching staff. He graduated from Arizona State with a BA in Sports Journalism in the Spring of 2024.
Eli Gross, Assistant Director of Operations
Sun Devil Men’s Basketball has promoted Eli Gross to Assistant Director of Operations as part of their offseason staff upgrades. Gross has been with the program each of the past three seasons, dedicating time and effort to ensure the success of Men’s Basketball at Arizona State.
“I’m thrilled to be officially joining the ASU Men’s Basketball staff full time after three years with the program as a Graduate Assistant and Student Manager,” Gross reflected. “It’s an incredible honor to keep growing and learning under Coach Hurley, and I’m excited to contribute to the team’s continued success. I look forward to growing in my career here at ASU and pushing myself to excel both personally and professionally within the program.”
Gross will work with Director of Operations Mickey Mitchell in managing the daily administrative, logistical, and facility needs of the men’s basketball program. That includes overseeing budgets, event planning, student staff, equipment, and team travel, while also ensuring compliance with institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and policies.
The 2024 Arizona State graudate is the perfect fit for the role having served in a similiar capacity last season as the team’s Graduate Assistant. Prior to his year as a GA, Gross was a student manager for the program for two seasons. He has gained valuable experience each of the past three years and will now be an integral part of the day-to-day operations of Sun Devil Men’s Basketball.
