INTERIM TAG REMOVED: Mayes named Head Basketball Coach at Moravian

Moravian University has removed the interim tag, making Michael Mayes the Greyhounds’ Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

“I am very excited to remove the Interim tag off of Mike’s name and officially welcome him as our next Men’s Basketball Coach, effective immediately,” commented Director of Athletics & Recreation Mary Beth Spirk. “Mike’s passion and energy as a coach is evident. More importantly he is a staunch recruiter and is a player’s coach. Mike cares deeply about not only the men’s basketball program but also Moravian University. We are very excited to elevate Mike and have him with us for many years to come. Congratulations Mike!”

Mayes moved up to Interim Head Coach last September and guided the Hounds to a 15-10 record this season including a 9-9 mark in Landmark Conference action.

“I am incredibly honored to be named the next Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball program at Moravian University,” stated Mayes. “This is a special opportunity, and I am committed to continue building a program that competes for championships, excels in the classroom and represents Moravian with pride in the community.”

Mayes arrived at Moravian in 2022 as a full-time assistant coach. Prior to a season at Drew University as an assistant coach in 2021-22, Mayes was the head coach at Sinai Christian Academy in New Jersey for three seasons while also serving stints as an assistant coach at St. Mary’s High School and Elizabeth High School in New Jersey.

Mayes graduated from Drew in 2011 with a degree in sociology, and he played in 96 games for the Rangers with 968 points, 342 rebounds, 256 assists, 124 steals and 23 blocked shots.

“I would like to sincerely thank Bryon L. Grigsby, Nicole Loyd, and Mary Beth Spirk for the opportunity to lead this program and for their faith in our direction moving forward. My family and I are grateful for the opportunity to join the Moravian community, and we are excited to begin this next chapter and get to work building something special,” commented Mayes.

The Greyhounds have completed their 2025-26 season after missing the Landmark Conference Tournament on a tiebreaker for the final spot in the field.
