The Head Men’s Basketball Coach will direct and administer all aspects of the Men’s Basketball program within NCAA, Conference, TAMUS and Tarleton State policies, guidelines and procedures. The Head Coach oversees recruiting, roster management, coaching strategy, staff supervision, scheduling, budgeting, work-outs, travel arrangements, and game planning for Tarleton State University Men’s Basketball. Performs tasks related to game administration of sporting events hosted by Tarleton State University.
The Head Men’s Basketball Coach is responsible for maintaining high academic standards to support the academic development, eligibility, retention, and graduation of student-athletes while prioritizing student welfare and program integrity. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
This position is on-site on Tarleton State University’s main campus in Stephenville, Texas. Work hours: Mon-Fri; 8 AM-5 PM or as work requirements indicate, including evenings, weekends, and extensive travel.
Responsibilities
- 40% Oversees recruiting efforts, roster management, scholarship allocation, travel arrangements, program budgeting, equipment management and game day preparations. Develops and implements a comprehensive recruiting strategy in accordance with NCAA Division I and Conference regulations. Promotes the athletic program through community events, public speaking, fundraising, media engagement, alumni outreach, and marketing initiatives.
- 30% Coaches student-athletes individually and in groups and demonstrates advanced basketball techniques. Develops offensive and defensive systems, game strategy, and position assignments. Plans and conducts practice sessions in accordance with NCAA and Conference regulations. Instructs student-athletes on physical health, team concepts, safety, and leadership development. Monitors and maintains the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the athletics program. Ensures adherence to all Association, Conference, TAMUS, and University rules by student-athletes and staff.
- 15% Oversees all administrative aspects of the program including scheduling, fiscal management, staff supervision, performance evaluations, compliance documentation, and coordination with academic support services to monitor student-athlete progress and eligibility.
- 10% Provides leadership in external relations and revenue-generating initiatives including donor cultivation, fundraising collaboration with Athletics Development, sponsorship engagement, and participation in promotional activities that enhance program visibility and support long-term program growth.
- 5% This position may be required to perform tasks related to game administration of sporting events hosted by Tarleton State University. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three years of progressively responsible collegiate basketball coaching experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques associated with Division I men’s basketball required.
- Thorough knowledge of NCAA rules, compliance standards, and Conference regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate complex recruiting strategies and competitive systems.
- Excellent organization, leadership and staff supervision skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and program operations effectively.
- Willingness and ability to work effectively with student-athletes, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and associated constituencies.
- Working familiarity with computer systems, recruiting platforms, video analysis software and social media.
- Functional knowledge of NIL and Revenue Sharing dynamics within the NCAA Division I market.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Master’s degree.
- Previous experience as a Head or Associate Head Coach at the NCAA Division I level.
Other requirements
Work is normally performed in a gymnasium, practice facility, or game arena setting with significant travel to/from away contests and recruiting activities required. Evening and weekend work is required.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
Salary Range: The target base annual salary is commensurate and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
