Description:
Reporting directly to the Director of Athletics, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach is primarily responsible for the overall operation and success of the LU men’s basketball program, including developing a vision and providing principled leadership that promotes the health and well-being of student-athletes, competitive success, positive attitudes, successful outcomes, strong working relationships, a positive work environment, and a positive student-athlete experience.
Essential Job Functions
  • Recruit and assess appropriate student-athletes with excellent academic backgrounds to a NCAA Division I FCS institution.
  • Manage scholarship allocation to recruit and enroll the ideal student-athletes to the program.
  • Oversee player development.
  • Possess knowledge of and abide by NCAA and Southland Conference rules and regulations.
  • Conduct meetings with assistant coaches and distribute practice area assignments.
  • Attend department meetings.
  • Coordinate with the athletic administration the hiring of assistant coaches, expenditure and monitoring of the budget, awarding of athletic scholarship, eligibility, facility requests for games, practices, equipment purchases, major repairs, game administration and work orders, and team travel advances including transportation, lodging and meals.
  • Coordinate fund-raising and development activities in conjunction with the athletic department efforts.
  • Perform speaking engagements to solicit positive public relations for the program and the department in the community.
  • Work closely with Sports Medicine for the care and prevention of athletic injuries and support the overall education program for student-athletes, including but not limited to leadership development, drug and alcohol education, and sexual assault prevention.
  • Coordinate information and game results with Athletic Communications to obtain publicity for the program.
  • Serve as a liaison with various support groups both internal and external
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Men’s college, or professional coaching experience.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Be a person of high character and possess strong moral values.
  • A thorough knowledge of athletic administration at the collegiate level and a demonstrated record of successful athletic administrative experience or equivalent management experience.
  • Commitment to excellence in academics and athletics.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with both internal and external constituencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and operations, with the ability to work with admissions and coaches in the appropriate recruitment of student-athletes.
