D2 NEWS: Dunlap steps down as Head Basketball Coach at Colorado Mesa

Colorado Mesa men’s basketball head coach Mike Dunlap has announced on Monday he will be stepping down from his position due to health concerns.

“I would like to thank the Colorado Mesa Administration, President Marshall, and Director of Athletics Rob Courtney, the faculty, and the entire student body,” coach Dunlap said. “I also want to thank my assistants and players as they have meant everything to me and the program.”

Dunlap led the Mavericks to 40 wins, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2025-26, during his two seasons at the helm. He coached seven All-RMAC student-athletes and helped guide several others during his time.

“Coach Dunlap has had a tremendous impact on our men’s basketball program and the Colorado Mesa community,” said Director of Athletics Rob Courtney. “We are grateful for the leadership, experience, and passion he brought to our student-athletes and wish him the very best as he focuses on his health. He will always be a valued member of the Maverick family.”

Dunlap is 462-253 in his 23-year head coaching career. Prior to his two seasons at Colorado Mesa, he was the head coach at Cal Lutheran, MSU Denver, St. John’s and his alma mater Loyola Marymount.

“My wife, Mollie and I have thoroughly enjoyed our two seasons in Grand Junction. If it were not for my health concerns, I would still be moving forward.”

A national search to identify the next men’s basketball coach at Colorado Mesa will begin immediately.
