Description:

As an integral member of the Department of Athletics team, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach will be responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of Bentley’s Men’s Basketball program. This position includes oversight and implementation of key responsibilities in the areas of coaching, recruitment, student-athlete development and wellness, competition scheduling, program administration, fundraising activity and operating budget management. Our Men’s Basketball program competes in the Northeast-10 Conference. The program will be conducted in accordance with all University and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, regulations, and policies.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct practice and game coaching in compliance with the University and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Provide appropriate leadership, direction and supervision relevant to the academic progress and personal development of student-athletes.
  • Prepare effective game strategies; use proven and effective coaching techniques; design and coordinate practice sessions.
  • Create, present, and maintain records of up-to-date lesson plans for pre-season/season practice drills and procedures detailing the desired goals to be achieved.
  • Schedule practice and game preparation sessions. conduct post-game analysis and incorporate it into lesson plans.
  • Motivate individuals to perform at their peak abilities as student-athletes. Monitor the academic success of Men’s Basketball Student-Athletes and encourage high achievement.
  • Respond effectively to concerns expressed by student-athletes about athletic and nonathletic issues.
  • Keep Athletic Director informed of concerns raised by student-athletes. Oversee the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified prospective student-athletes.
  • Commit to the off-season with regards to recruiting, current player management, upcoming budget, scheduling, etc.
  • Arrange and attend recruiting visits to schools, games, and recruiting events, maintaining full and accurate records of recruiting events.
  • Supervise recruiting efforts of Assistant Coaches.
  • Recruit, select, develop, and monitor work performance of Assistant Coaches. Work with Assistant Coaches on game preparation, film review and practice schedule.
  • Set game and practice strategy in conjunction with Assistant Coaches to achieve winning results.
  • Engaging in fund-raising efforts for program and department. Representing the Department of Athletics at designated University, conference, departmental and community functions Building alumni relationships Promoting team participation and personally committing to community outreach
  • Promote the athletic program and specific sport through community events, public speaking, fundraising, and marketing.
  • Engages in public relations and community outreach activities, including sponsorship and fundraising activities, which includes: participating in community sporting activities; soliciting funds and sponsorships

Other Duties

  • Attend all Athletic Department coach’s meetings as well as University Town Halls and Student Affairs Division meetings. Complete all paperwork in a timely manner regarding rosters, purchase orders, meal expenses, eligibility forms, reimbursements, end-of-season reports.
  • Engage with the community-at the University and divisional level-in events and gatherings to promote your team and the athletics department.
  • Meet regularly with Sport Administrator and Athletic Director.
  • Assure that team presents a positive image both externally and on campus.
  • Committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff
  • Meet with donors and alumni relations on fundraising efforts to support the Men’s Basketball program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year collegiate institution.
  • 7+ years coaching experience at the intercollegiate level or professional level. Experience in coaching and knowledge of the fundamentals, tactics and strategies of coaching intercollegiate Men’s Basketball with ability to recruit talented players for the program.
  • Communication Skills – This position is expected to have a high level of communication skills with student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, their coaches, counselors, parents and boosters in the community.
  • Fundraising – The ability to develop the sports community in the areas of support and fundraising.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and management qualities, with a commitment to developing and maintain a positive and productive playing environment for all team members.
  • Proven ability to provide mentoring and leadership to student-athletes and a commitment to student athlete welfare.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to NCAA/conference rules and requirements relevant to the conduct of an intercollegiate program.
  • Knowledge of athletic recruitment methods and techniques.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent analytical, time management and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work and/or travel, include evening, weekend or overnight assignments.
