D3 NEWS: Huntingdon College names Carson Long Head Basketball Coach

Huntingdon College Director of Athletics Eric Levanda has announced the hiring of Carson Long to serve as the college’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

“We are incredibly proud to welcome Carson Long as our new head men’s basketball coach to Huntingdon College,” President Dr. Anthony Leigh stated. ” He brings a profoundly student-centered spirit that perfectly embodies the true essence of NCAA Division III athletics. He understands exactly what it takes to maintain a winning culture, and his unwavering commitment to being the standard of excellence will inspire our student-athletes to achieve greatness both on the court, in the classroom, and in their engagement in the life of the college and the broader community.”

Long, a native of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, comes to Huntingdon after serving under former Hawk and Hampden-Sydney’s Head Coach, Caleb Kimbrough, for the last three seasons. During his time with the Tigers, Hampden-Sydney saw three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including a ODAC Tournament Championship and a runner-up finish in the National Championship in 2024. In his tenure, Long saw 7 players receive all-conference recognition, with one of those being recognized as the ODAC Player of the Year, and two being named All-Americans.

“It is a tremendous honor to be named the head men’s basketball coach at Huntingdon College,” shared Long. “My wife, Bryce, and I are excited to join the Hawks family and look forward to getting to work, building something special. I would like to thank President Dr. Anthony Leigh, Mr. Jay Dorman, and Athletic Director Eric Levanda for their belief in me and for providing me with this opportunity. I’m also incredibly grateful to Coach Caleb Kimbrough for his guidance, mentorship, and support throughout my playing/coaching career. His leadership has played a major role in shaping me both personally and professionally. “

Prior to his stint in Hampden-Sydney, Carson served as an assistant coach at Ferrum College for one season, serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator while being the youngest head assistant coach in the ODAC.

Long’s coaching career thus far comes behind an impressive playing career at the NCAA Division III Level at Guilford College. Playing for Guilford legend Coach Tom Palombo, Carson served as a 3-year team captain while being named an all-conference recipient three times as well. In 2019, he led the Quakers to an ODAC Title and the NCAA Elite Eight while averaging 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. In the 2017 season, Long was recognized as the college’s Male Athlete of the Year, guiding Guilford to regular season and conference tournament titles while being recognized as the ODAC Tournament MVP and receiving 2nd team all-region honors.

Following his playing career at Guilford, Carson played 2nd level pro basketball for the Sligo All-Stars while serving the Sports Changes Life program in Ireland.

“I am happy to welcome Carson and wife Bryce, to the Huntingdon family,” Director of Athletics Eric Levanda shared. “Carson brings a quality and well rounded experience from two model Division III men’s basketball programs, both as a player at Guilford and as an assistant at Hampden-Sydney.  I’m fired up to have Carson add his experience in the leadership of the next chapter of our men’s basketball program.”
