Corey McCrae, who most recently served as an assistant coach at Boston College, has returned to the Delaware men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Martin Ingelsby announced Monday. McCrae coached under Ingelsby from 2016-2022 at Delaware, as well as played for him as a freshman at Wagner College in 2002-03.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Corey and his family back to the Newark community,” Ingelsby said. “Corey is an experienced leader and an excellent recruiter with deep, established national recruiting ties that will immediately elevate our program. He is an exceptional coach who possesses a unique ability to connect with players and consistently get the absolute best out of people. He will be a valuable asset to our team, and we are excited for the impact he will make both on and off the court.”
While at Boston College, the staff led the Eagles to the ACC tournament in the 2022-2023 and 2023-24 seasons. Also during his BC tenure, its staff developed two ACC Most Improved Players in Donald Hand Jr. (2024-25) and Quinten Post (2023-24), along with three All-ACC and one NABC All-District players.
“I’m extremely blessed and thankful to be back at the University of Delaware,” said McCrae. “Coach Martin gave me my first collegiate opportunity 10 years ago, and this program played a major role in my growth both professionally and personally. This place is special, and it truly feels like coming home. I’m eager to serve our student-athletes and staff, and help position this program to compete for a Conference USA title and return to the NCAA Tournament.”
Prior to BC, McCrae spent six years as a Fightin’ Blue Hen from 2016 to 2022. During the 2021-22 season, Delaware won 22 games en route to capturing the 2022 CAA Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. During his time at Delaware, Ingelsby’s staff developed three CAA Rookies of the Year, four CAA All-Rookie selections, and was named one of the top five assistant coaches in the CAA in a poll conducted by Stadium.
During his tenure at UD, McCrae played a vital role in the revitalization of the Blue Hens basketball program. In each of his first four seasons, the team’s win total improved from the prior season. During his first year with the Blue Hens in 2016-17, McCrae helped Delaware nearly double its win total. In 2019-20, the Blue & Gold recorded the eighth 20-win campaign in program history, finishing with 22 victories including a 9-0 stretch to begin the campaign. That season, the Blue Hens earned their first vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll in two decades.
Prior to his time at Delaware, McCrae served as an assistant at his alma mater, DeMatha Catholic High School, in Hyattsville, Md. for seven years (2009-16). He simultaneously served as head coach for the DC Assault and DC Premier teams in the AAU circuit from 2012-14. McCrae also worked as an athletic trainer with ASM Sport Management in 2009 in Las Vegas, training professional athletes and enhancing players’ skill sets in preparation for the upcoming NBA season.
McCrae began his collegiate playing career at Wagner from 2002-04. He then played his final two years at Fordham, where he served as team captain during both seasons with the Rams. He graduated with a business management degree from Fordham in 2006 and earned the men’s basketball program’s Taco Poto Award for outstanding leadership in 2005.
McCrae and his wife, Mahoganey, are parents to their son CJ, and daughter Saige.
