USC Upstate men’s basketball head coach Marty Richter announced the addition of Shaun Vandiver to the Spartans’ coaching staff ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Richter enters his third season leading the program this fall after USC Upstate posted a seven-game win improvement and earned 10-plus home victories for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
Vandiver joins the Spartans after spending the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach at Weber State. He brings nearly 25 years of collegiate coaching experience to Hub City, including seven seasons as a head coach and multiple stops at the Division I level.
Prior to Weber State, Vandiver spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Wyoming, helping guide the Cowboys to the 2022 NCAA Tournament. He also served as the head coach at Emporia State from 2011-18 and has held coaching positions at Northern Colorado, Bowling Green, Boise State, Colorado and Wyoming.
“Shaun is an elite coach whose DNA stems from both high-level college basketball and professional basketball,” Richter said. “He immediately makes our program better and understands what it takes to develop student-athletes to compete and win championships now and at the next level. We are thrilled he is coming to Spartanburg.”
Vandiver also enjoyed a decorated playing career at Colorado, where he was a two-time First Team All-Big Eight selection and was inducted into the University of Colorado Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. He was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 25th overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft before beginning a lengthy professional career in Europe.
“We have made tremendous strides over the last two years, and Shaun is going to help us make another jump in our program’s success in year three,” Richter said.
