Winthrop head men’s basketball coach Mark Prosser announced the addition of Ronrico White to the coaching staff as an assistant coach.
White joins the Eagle staff after spending last season on staff at Tennessee Tech and has extensive experience coaching across a number of conference including the SEC, OVC, Big South and Division III levels.
“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to represent Winthrop University,” said White. “I am very appreciative to be a part of Coach Prosser’s staff, which has seen a ton of success. I’d like to thank Coach Prosser and Director of Athletics, Chuck Rey, for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started!”
This marks the second stop in the Big South Conference for White as he was on the coaching staff at Gardner-Webb in 2018-19 when the Runnin’ Bulldogs claimed their first Big South Conference men’s basketball championship giving them the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
“We are truly excited to add Rico White to our staff as an assistant coach,” said Prosser. “I have known and admired Rico since his playing days in high school, and feel very fortunate to have a coach of his caliber join our program. He has experience at every level of Division 1 basketball, including in the Big South, and will bring so much to our program the day he starts. He is a tremendous teacher of all aspects of the game, and is an even better person. Please help us welcome Rico and his wife Cai to Rock the Hill!”
White’s coaching success extends well beyond the college game. Over the years, he has helped guide more than 25 players into the professional ranks, including Will Baker, Trae Hannibal, KJ Williams, and Jordan Wright in the NBA G League, as well as numerous others across Europe, such as Tevin Brown, Nate Johnson, Jose Perez, David Efianayi, and DJ Laster.
A Knoxville, Tennessee, native, White enjoyed an outstanding playing career at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, playing for coaches John Shulman and Will Wade. He finished as the program’s 14th all-time leading scorer and earned a bachelor’s degree in business and communications. He graduated from Chattanooga in 2014 with a bachelor of arts degree in business and communications.
Basketball runs in his family, as his father, Tony White, was an All-America guard at the University of Tennessee as well as a 1987 NBA Draft pick for the Chicago Bulls. His older brother, Tony White Jr., was also a standout point guard at the College of Charleston, playing Hall Fame coach Bobby Cremins.
