Vermont Academy seeks an experienced, dynamic, and highly motivated Head Coach for Boys’ Prep Basketball to lead one of the school’s premier athletic teams. The Head Coach will provide leadership for all aspects of boys’ prep basketball, including player development, team culture, recruiting, college placement, practice and game preparation, and the overall student-athlete experience.
Vermont Academy competes in NEPSAC AAA, one of the most competitive levels of prep school basketball in the country. The team has established a strong national presence and a long history of preparing student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level, including at NCAA Division I, II, and III institutions.
We are seeking a coach who understands the expectations of a high-level prep basketball environment while also embracing the broader mission of Vermont Academy. The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher of the game, a strong relationship-builder, an effective recruiter, and a visible and positive member of the school community.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction for all aspects of Boys’ Prep Basketball.
- Plan and conduct high-level practices focused on individual skill development, team concepts, competitive preparation, and basketball IQ.
- Establish a team culture grounded in accountability, discipline, work ethic, sportsmanship, and respect.
- Prepare the team to compete successfully within NEPSAC AAA and against a highly competitive regional and national schedule.
- Recruit prospective student-athletes who are strong fits for both Vermont Academy and the basketball team, working collaboratively with the Athletic and Admissions offices.
- Develop and maintain relationships with prospective student-athletes, families, club and AAU coaches, and others throughout the basketball community.
- Guide student-athletes through the college recruitment process, including communication with college coaches, player evaluation, exposure opportunities, and appropriate advocacy for each student.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with current players and families through consistent and professional communication.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Athletics and coaching staff to support the overall direction of Vermont Academy Athletics.
- Coordinate and supervise assistant coaches and establish clear expectations for the coaching staff.
- Maintain appropriate team records, rosters, schedules, equipment, and other administrative responsibilities.
- Represent Vermont Academy professionally in interactions with officials, opposing schools, college coaches, families, alumni, and the broader basketball community.
- Support student-athletes as members of the larger Vermont Academy community and reinforce the importance of academic responsibility, citizenship, and personal growth.
Qualifications
The strongest candidates will demonstrate:
- Significant basketball coaching experience, preferably at the prep school, collegiate, high-level high school, or elite club/AAU level.
- A strong understanding of player development and the ability to teach the game at an advanced level.
- Knowledge of the college basketball recruiting landscape and experience helping student-athletes navigate the recruitment process.
- An established network within prep, collegiate, AAU, and/or grassroots basketball.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain talented student-athletes.
- Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- The ability to build meaningful and appropriate relationships with adolescents and their families.
- A commitment to sportsmanship, integrity, and the development of the whole student-athlete.
- An understanding of, or willingness to embrace, the expectations and responsibilities of an independent boarding school community.
- Bachelor’s degree.
