Shammond Williams, a talented coach with 13 years of collegiate coaching experience, has been named an Assistant Coach by Monmouth University Men’s Basketball Head Coach King Rice.
In addition to his coaching experience, Williams was a member of the NBA for nine seasons and played professionally for 16 years.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Shammond to our staff,” said Rice. “He has an outstanding playing career, playing professionally for 16 years, including nine years in the NBA, and has built a strong career since retiring from playing. He brings a wealth of knowledge from both his playing and coaching experiences, which will be a great asset to our program.”
Williams most recently served as the assistant coach and interim head coach at the University of Denver during the 2024-25 season. There he helped develop the Summit League Freshman of the Year in Sebastian Akins.
Prior to his arrival in Denver, Williams spent three years on the Old Dominion women’s basketball staff. There he assisted the Monarchs to three consecutive 20-win seasons,
highlighted by back-to-back WNIT appearances. He helped develop the 2023 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Kaye Clark, who finishing 8th nationally in steals.
“I’m extremely excited to have an opportunity to work with Coach Rice and the Monmouth men’s basketball staff,” said Williams. “I’ve known Coach Rice for years and he has been a mentor, brother and resource for me throughout my whole career. He’s an outstanding leader and wonderful person. I’m truly blessed to have this opportunity. I would like to also thank President Dr. Patrick F. Leahy and Athletic Director Jennifer Sansevero for an opportunity to represent Monmouth University and the Monmouth athletic department.”
Williams has also made stops at Western Kentucky (2016-17), Tulane (2013-16) and Furman (2012-13).
He was named a Top Three Recruiter in Conference USA by Sporting News in 2017 and one of the Most Influential Assistant Coaches in Mid Major Basketball by Silver Waves Media in 2022.
Williams has coached several NBA draft picks along the way.
Williams earned his degree in Management and Industrial Relations from the University of North Carolina in 1998.
While there he was a three-time Final Four participant and was named the NCAA Tournament West Regional MVP in 1997. He still ranks among the top five in North Carolina history for three-pointers made and free throw percentage. Williams also ranks among the top five for single-season three-pointers made and free throw percentage.
Rice added, “Shammond is also another member of the North Carolina family, and we have spent countless hours over the years talking basketball. Additionally, Shammond helped us in the past with the recruitment of Justin Ray, so he already has a connection to our program and understands what we are about. We are very excited to have him here and look forward to what he will bring to Monmouth Basketball.”
Following his stellar career at North Carolina, Williams was a second round draft pick by in the 1998 NBA draft. He played for Atlanta, Seattle, Boston, Denver, New Orleans and Orlando. Williams also played in Europe in Russia, Spain, Cyprus and Italy.
