Talked about this a bunch today. San Diego finally released an official statement.
The University of San Diego announced Monday that Bill Grier, head coach for the men’s basketball program, will not return for the 2015-16 season. Grier recently completed his eighth season with the Toreros.
"Bill Grier will not return as head coach for the men’s basketball program next season," stated Ky Snyder, USD Vice President for Athletics and Facilities Management. "Bill, his staff and their families have represented the university well and we appreciate all of their contributions over the years. We’ll begin conducting a national search immediately."
This past season Grier led the Toreros to a 15-16 overall record and 8-10 mark in the West Coast Conference. Having just completed his 8th season at the helm of the Torero program, he finished with a career record of 117-144, along with a 51-73 WCC mark. During his rookie season (2007-08) he led the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 while winning the WCC Tournament and then stunning No. 15 UCONN in the first round of the NCAA’s. Last season he directed the Toreros to an overall mark of 18-17 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIT Tournament. He owns six of the program’s eight wins over top-25 NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams. Under his direction three Toreros are now the program career statistical leaders – Johnny Dee in scoring (2,046 points), Christopher Anderson in assists (757) and steals (254), and junior center Jito Kok in blocked shots (195).
"I want to thank President Lyons, Ky Snyder and the University of San Diego for the tremendous opportunity to serve such an outstanding academic institution," stated Bill Grier. "I also want to thank my staff and our players for their efforts and contributions. I’m more disappointed than anyone that we didn’t win more games, but I know we did things the right way."
