Joel Dearring, praised for bringing stability to Chesapeake College’s men’s basketball program, resigned as the Skipjacks’ head coach.

"Joel was the third coach in three years when we hired him in 2010," noted Chesapeake College Athletics Director Frank Szymanski. "We appreciate the five years Coach Dearring contributed to our program and to the college."

"I’m pleased I was able to help so many young men mature as players, people and students," said Dearring, who came to Chesapeake after two decades as an assistant coach at Prince George’s Community College.

Dearring’s best seasons were in 2011-12 and 2012-13, when the Skipjacks posted identical 17-12 records. Chesapeake was 13-35 over Dearring’s last two campaigns, leaving him with a 57-66 overall record at the helm for the Skipjacks.

Szymanski said the college will immediately begin the search for Dearring’s replacement. He observed that the position should be attractive given Chesapeake’s title-winning history and the state-of-the-art facilities the next coach will be able to use to attract and train student athletes.

"Chesapeake has won seven region championships and appeared in 12 region finals in four sports over the last 10 years," said Szymanski, noting those include one region title and two region finals in men’s basketball. "And those titles were won either with aging facilities or – in the case of this year’s women’s basketball team – with no gym to call home.

"This fall, when we open the $36 million Health Professions and Athletics Center, Chesapeake will feature one of the best training facilities and events venues in Region XX," said Szymanski.
