Matthews promoted at Seton Hill

Paul Matthews has been named the Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Seton Hill University. Matthews sees the new opportunity "as a way to continually improve upon the success we have had over the past few years and continue to learn from an experienced professional like Tony Morocco."

Entering his fourth season at Seton Hill, Matthews spent two years as a Graduate Assistant for the Griffins before being named Assistant Coach in 2013. He earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Washington and Jefferson College in 2011 and earned his MBA from Seton Hill University in 2013.

A Greensburg native, Matthews was a student athlete at Greensburg Salem High School where he scored 1320 points over 3 varsity seasons. During his senior year at Greensburg Salem, he was voted section player of the year and was named to the Post- Gazette Fab Five East All-Star team.

Matthews attended Hampden Sydney (Va.) as a college freshman and led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 3 point shooting percentage. Matthews transferred to Washington and Jefferson College and was a 2nd Team All-PAC performer and team MVP for the Presidents, averaging 14.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2 assists per game as a senior.

Matthews comes from a strong basketball family. His father, Bernie Jr, was a guard at Division 1 Samford University. His grandfather, Bernie Matthews Sr., is a former Duquesne University great, Pennsylvania Hall of Fame inductee and the all time winningest coach in the history of St. Vincent College men’s basketball with 505 career wins.

Griffins Head Coach Tony Morocco is happy to have Matthews on his staff, noting "Paul’s an exceptionally bright coach who sees things on the court that many seasoned coaches do not."
