Head coach Craig Neal has rounded out his staff of the University of New Mexico men’s basketball program with the appointment of Cody Hopkins as Director of Basketball Operations. Hopkins comes to Albuquerque after spending the last season as an assistant coach at the University of Texas – Pan American. He replaces Mile Iuzzolino who left the program for an assistant coach position at Canisius College.
“I am very happy to add Cody to our staff,” said head coach Craig Neal. “He comes to the Lobo Family with a lot of good experience as a coach and as a director of operations. His background also includes work in the Mountain West during his time at TCU. We are excited to get ready for the season with Cody as a member of our staff.”
Hopkins will oversee all team travel for the Lobos as well as help manage team academics, student managerial staff and community service projects.
Prior to spending last season as an assistant coach at UT-Pan American, Hopkins spent the 2012-13 season as a member of the North Texas Mean Green basketball staff. He spent three seasons as the Director of Operations at Texas Christian University during the Horned Frogs’ final three seasons in the Mountain West Conference.
“I am both incredibly happy and appreciative that Coach Neal has brought me to UNM,” Hopkins said. “I have grown up in this business, at different levels, and have always dreamed of being a part of a basketball program as historic and successful as the Lobos have been over the years. To have that dream now become a reality is incredibly special and makes me excited for this season to start.”
Hopkins first spent his collegiate basketball career at Northern Oklahoma College, where he earned all-conference honors, before finishing his career at Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern State in Health and Human Performance. He is the son of Jerry Hopkins who is the former head coach at Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
