Virginia Union hires assistants

Virginia Union University head men’s basketball coach Tony Sheals has rounded out his coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Derek Thompson and Hannibal Tuck will be on the bench as assistant coaches when the Panthers’ tip off their 2014-15 season.

Thompson was an assistant head men’s basketball coach at Miles from 2010 until last season. He oversaw the preparation of all game-day activities while supervising recruiting and player development.

Thompson has also been an assistant basketball coach at Clark Atlanta University, Southern University and was the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I while at Morris Brown College.

Tuck comes to Virginia Union after serving as the Varsity Basketball Coach at St. Christopher’s Boys School in Richmond, Va., from 2010 until 2014. While at St. Christopher’s, Tuck coached the boys varsity to a Top 10 finish in the Virginia Preparatory League for three consecutive years and guided the team to the most consecutive wins in school history.

Tuck has also served as Head Coach of the Squires Richmond Basketball of the Amateur Athletic Union from 1993 until 2014. He was also the head coach in basketball and football at John Rolfe Middle School in Henrico, Va. Tuck is an adjunct faculty member in the Criminal Justice Department.
