Clark Atlanta University (CAU) shredded the interim tag and named Tony LaMarr head coach of the men’s basketball team as he enters his second season at the helm of the program and fifth overall.
"I am excited for this opportunity to continue to lead the CAU men’s basketball program on the path to regain its championship status it heralded in 2011," said head coach Tony LaMarr. "Aside from winning on the court, two of my goals this season are to make sure the players do well academically and be good ambassadors for the university and the men’s basketball program."
In his first season as interim head coach (2013-2014), LaMarr’s Panthers finished third in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and garnered 15 wins overall which were 11 wins better than the prior year. He previously served three years as Clark Atlanta’s assistant coach and was instrumental in guiding the Panthers to their first SIAC title in 46 years in 2011 and to a consecutive trip to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Regional Tournament.
LaMarr holds over nine years of experience at the professional, collegiate, and high school level as a coach, player, and scout. Prior to his arrival at CAU, LaMarr served as an assistant coach for two seasons at Fort Valley State (2009-2010) and one year at Lawson State Community College in Birmingham (2008-2009) where aside from coaching his duties at both places included recruiting coordinator, scouting and player development. His high school coaching stops include Shiloh High School and Central Gwinnett High School where he coached five Division I players. He has also served as camp director for the European Pro Showcase.
A native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, LaMarr attended Tucker High School where he earned All-State, Metro Atlanta Team of the Year and Dekalb County Player of the Year honors. He began his collegiate playing career at Itawamba Community College in Mississippi where he was an All-Region selection before signing with Morris Brown College. He is a graduate of Eastern Oregon University.
