East Mississippi Community College Staff Update

East Mississippi Community College men’s basketball coach Mark White has hired Utah native Shelby Lindley and former Mississippi State University hoops staffer Drew Bernd to the Lions’ coaching staff.

Lindley, a native of Wellsville, Utah, arrives on the Scooba campus after serving as the interim head men’s basketball coach last season at Central Wyoming College. As one of the youngest men’s basketball head coaches in the collegiate ranks at just 24 years of age a season ago, Lindley took over CWC’s hoops program prior to the season and proceeded to guide the 2012-13 Rustlers to a 23-7 record.

Prior to his one-year stint at Central Wyoming, Lindley spent the 2011-12 campaign as a graduate assistant coach/director of basketball operations on the men’s basketball staff at Idaho State University. He also previously gained NJCAA coaching experience assisting at the College of Southern Idaho.

Originally hailing from Waupaca, Wis., Bernd joins White’s EMCC coaching staff after working a nine-month internship as an assistant basketball coach at the prestigious Canarias Basketball Academy, located in the Canary Islands just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa.

Bernd’s stint of international experience was preceded by a six-year association within the Southeastern Conference ranks at Mississippi State. Following two seasons serving as an undergraduate team manager for former MSU men’s basketball coach Rick Stansbury, Bernd took over head manager responsibilities for the final two years of his undergraduate career. After earning his bachelor’s degree in teaching and coaching in 2010, he stayed on board the Bulldogs’ staff as a graduate assistant for two more years. While earning his master’s degree in sports studies, Bernd became the basketball program’s video coordinator in addition to working with team scouting reports and assisting with individual player workouts.
