Cinco Boone has been named the assistant men’s basketball coach at Angelo State University after prior coaching positions at the Division I, Division II, junior college and high school levels.
Boone worked with Angelo State head coach Chris Beard last season as his assistant coach at McMurry University following two seasons as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin. He was also the head coach at Jacksonville College and has coaching experiences at Hardin Simmons University and Portales High School (New Mexico).
“I’m really excited to continue working with coach Beard and have this opportunity at Angelo State,” Boone said. “There are great facilities and tradition here and I think we can attract some top-notch recruits to play for the program. I really believe in what coach Beard does and I think we’re going to win a lot of games here.”
Boone helped Beard guide McMurry’s basketball team through its first year as a NCAA Division II program last season, posting a 19-10 overall record while advancing to the regional final of the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament.
“Cinco is a proven coach, recruiter and winner,” said Beard, who was named the fifth head coach in ASU history on March 22. “Our players will benefit greatly from his work ethic and leadership. He has been a head college coach and also has Division I coaching experience. Cinco will be a huge asset to our program.”
The War Hawks went 3-1 record against Lone Star Conference opponents, including a 76-56 victory over Cameron which advanced to the NCAA DII South Central Championships. McM also earned wins over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
A Portales, N.M. native, Boone earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University in Mathematics after graduating from Portales High School. His first coaching position came at his high school alma mater where he was the assistant varsity coach from 2003-06.
Boone, 29, began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Hardin Simmons University during the 2006-07 season. At HSU, he was the primary assistant and head recruiter along with attending graduate school and teaching two Physical Assessment and Conditioning courses. He earned his graduate degree in Sports Recreation and Management in 2008.
His experience in Abilene led to the opportunity to coach at Jacksonville College in East Texas. At JC, Boone started as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach for the 2009-10 season. As the head coach, JC was a Region XIV qualifier and won its opening postseason game. His team also knocked off two nationally top-10 teams.
From Jacksonville College, Boone accepted an assistant coach’s position at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. An SFA assistant for Danny Kaspar, now the head coach at Texas State, Boone’s responsibilities included recruiting, scouting, on-floor coaching and academic supervision. He helped lead the Lumberjacks to two Southland Conference tournament appearances.
“I’ve worked with some outstanding people throughout my career,” Boone said. “To be able to learn a lot of different styles and recruiting philosophies has broadened my contacts and range of experiences.”
Boone has already started his coaching duties at ASU through recruiting, evaluation and helping with spring workouts.
