Minot State University Athletic Director Rick Hedberg announced Tuesday that head men’s basketball coach Peter Stewart has resigned his position effective July 20.

Hedberg received noticed from Stewart Monday after the second year head coach made the decision to spend more time with his family and to pursue career interests outside the game of basketball.

Stewart, the 14th head coach in school history, spent the past two seasons at the helm of the Beavers men’s team, guiding the program during its final season in the NAIA and through a grueling transition period in 2011-12. Minot State is set to begin its first season as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and a full member of NCAA Division II this year.

Minot State finished the 2011-12 season with a 4-25 record overall and Stewart was 17-42 in two seasons with the Beavers. MISU won a Dakota Athletic Conference first-round playoff game under Stewart in 2010-11, but was not eligible for postseason play in 2011-12 because of its move to NCAA Division II. Minot State had two All-DAC players selected during his time as head coach.
