Bill Lewit, who won a national championship and 354 games in 14 seasons as a junior college head coach, has joined Mike McConathy’s Northwestern State basketball staff as an assistant coach. He is the second assistant hired at NW State this week – DBO Jacob Spielbauer was promoted to assistant coach a few days ago. Lewit spent the last two years at the University of New Orleans, where he was associate head coach before the Privateers dropped out of the Sun Belt Conference and moved down to Division II for this season. Ironically, Lewit will complete NSU’s staff vacancy created when 11-year NSU assistant Mark Slessinger was named head coach at UNO last month. He was head coach at Cecil College in North East, Md., where he led the Seahawks to the 2006 NJCAA Division II national championship and at least 21 wins in each of his last 12 seasons, with the last five years posting at least 31 wins each season. Lewit’s appointment is subject to the approval of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
