Sunday Dirt – 5/4/14

Just got off of the Little League field. Great day watching one of the Little DirtBags pitch a complete game and launch some missiles to the outfield! Here are a few things that I’ve heard while waving 10-year olds in from 3rd (and yes, I did get yelled at for checking my texts with the bases loaded)…

• I have heard from a big-time source that Vanderbilt assistant Yanni Hufnagel is involved with a spot at Cal. Hufnagel joined the Vandy staff last spring after four seasons as an assistant at Harvard. Also, with the expected departure of Vandy assistant David Cason to VCU (first reported this on 4/23 – http://hoopdirt.com/blog/73f29f45/vcu-rumor/…), I have heard that UNCG assistant Duane Simpkins is in the mix to replace him. Simpkins has been on the UNCG staff for the past two seasons, and was the DBO at Towson before that.

• Two separate sources have confirmer that Ole Miss assistant Sergio Rouco is headed to South Florida. Rouco, who has been on the Ole Miss staff since 2011, is a Miami guy. He is the former head coach at Florida International (2004-09), and was also the head coach at Miami Norland HS. He is the second Andy Kennedy staffer to depart in the last few weeks. Al Pinkins also departed to join the staff at Tennessee.

• Word on the street is that North Idaho College assistant Corey Symons is the leader to replace recently departed Jared Phay (who became the head coach at the College of Southern Idaho). Symons has been an assistant at NIC for the past 10 seasons.

• I have heard that Cincinnati-Clermont interim head coach Greg Himes will have his interim tag removed. He took over for former head coach John Hurley last May. Himes has also been the head coach at Southern State (OH) CC.

• Veteran college coach Jimmy Voight has taken a HS job in Kentucky. The former head coach at Ranger College, Bluefield State, Eastern Oklahoma, and Bacone, is the new head coach at Pulaski (KY) HS. He has also spent time as the associate head coach at Louisiana-Monroe.
