Daily Dirt – 3/22/13

Here are a few things that I’ve heard so far today…

• I have heard that Wake Forest assistant Rusty LaRue has emerged as a leader for the vacant spot at Longwood. He has been on the Wake staff for the past four seasons and played basketball, football, and baseball at Wake. LaRue also spent five seasons in the NBA and won an NBA Championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1998. The interesting fact here…LaRue played for Dave Odom at Wake Forest – Odom currently runs Collegiate Sports Associates –CSA is running the Longwood search.

• The ink isn’t even dry on Jeff Jackson’s “resignation” at Furman and some candidates are starting to emerge. I keep hearing Charleston Southern head coach Barclay Radebaugh’s name mentioned. He is a former Furman assistant (1990-1994), and has also been an assistant at Miami, South Carolina, Winthrop, Wofford, and East Tennessee State. He has been the HC at Charleston Southern since 2005, and put together back-to-back 19 win seasons.

• It sounds like the “hot” name to replace the retiring Mark Scherer at Elmhurst is University of St. Francis (IL) head coach John Baines. He has been at St. Francis for the past three seasons (21 wins this year) – before that, he spent ten seasons on Scherer’s staff at Elmhurst.
