A Step Up – Professional Development for college coaches

Would you someday like to be considered one of the best in the business? Want to learn the strategies of some of top programs in the nation? Want a setting where you can network, share ideas, challenge and encourage your colleagues on and off the court? If your answer to these questions is YES, then you are ready to take A STEP UP.

This spring, Felicia Hall Allen & Associates will host its’ second annual A Step Up Symposium at the downtown Marriott Hotel in Charlotte, NC on May 3-5. A Step Up: Charlotte2013 is a three-day career building and professional development event for basketball assistant coaches developed by the husband and wife team of Johnny and Felicia Allen. Its’ mission is to help assistant coaches gain knowledge, discover coaching insights and develop strategies, techniques and tactics to help them reach their full coaching potential.

Last year’s symposium was held in Dallas, Texas and featured some of the top coaches in Division I collegiate men’s basketball. Here are a selection of comments from past speakers and participants about A Step Up:

Mike Dunlap, Head Coach, Charlotte Bobcats (2011 Presenter): “Felicia and Johnny- Thank you. What a privilege to have met both of you, your staff, and all that comes with being first class people. It was a very nurturing experience and both of you left an indelible mark.”

Michael Plank, Graduate Assistant, University of San Francisco (2011 Participant): “A Step Up allowed me to learn first-hand from some of the top assistants in the country and helped me expand my college basketball contact base nationally. The opportunity high caliber assistants have to come and lead really makes for a quality production. I’ve recommended attending to any and all up and coming college basketball coaches. Find a way to get there NOW! You will not be disappointed.”

Kirby Hocutt, Athletic Director, Texas Tech University (2011 Speaker): “Felicia and Johnny do such a great job with bringing people together to help one another. The energy, the wealth of information that we shared was just tremendous. I would highly recommend it to anybody who is just committed to being the best they can be, committed to growing as a professional or executive. It was a tremendous experience and one that I would look forward to attending and participating in again.”

Rick Villarreal, Athletic Director, University of North Texas (2011 Speaker): “I think it’s a great opportunity. AD’s should encourage their assistant coaches to come to this (event). Not only does this talk about their performance on the court but it talks about the things that are important off the court – how to conduct themselves, how to build programs, how to build young people. I think it’s going to develop great young leaders for us when we’re looking for head coaches down the road.

James Whitford, Assistant Coach, University of Arizona (2011 Presenter): “It was an unbelievable experience to be here, for all of you who are considering attending down the road. It was an unbelievable line up of speakers here. In our business there are not enough chances for professional development. For me to come here and network, meet as many coaches as I did, having the athletic directors here and meet fellow coaches, it was a great learning experience. Those are relationships I’ll be able to pull on during the year.”

Jerome Tang, Assistant Coach, Baylor University (2011 Presenter): “Felicia and Johnny – I would like to thank both of you for allowing me to be a part of the best personal development event that I have ever been involved in. The information was great but the quality of people that I had a chance to be around was even better. You all have put wind in my sails. I am even more excited about what the future holds for me than ever before.”

Rodney Martin, Assistant Coach, Bethune-Cookman University (2011 Participant): I want to thank you both so much for putting together the symposium for the men’s coaches. I learned so much and gathered some great information. The experience was awesome and probably the best thing I’ve been a part of as far as a coach. What made it so good for me is that you got information from AD’s and other coaches that have been going through the things you go through and you want to come back and share it with other people”

Ryan Mahoney, Assistant Coach, Northern Oklahoma College (2011 Participant): “The experience I had here was unbelievable! Just the knowledge, the presenters, the passion, the energy, they all brought for three days was unbelievable. I think I have 25 pages of notes. I aspire to be an assistant coach on a Division I level and a head coach someday. It was just unbelievable to learn from some of the greats.”

David Bosley, Head Basketball Coach, Pasadena Memorial High School (2011 Participant): “I thoroughly enjoyed every second spent during this weekend’s symposium. As an aspiring college coach I felt this was the perfect platform to learn from the some of the best coaches and to better prepare myself for my next coaching position.”
