Daily Dirt – 5/11/12

Friday’s “dirt”…

• St. John’s assistant coach Mike Dunlap’s name has come up surrounding the Charlotte Bobcats search. Apparently the Bobcats have expressed some interest in speaking to Dunlap about their vacancy. Dunlap does have NBA experience – from 2006-2008, he was an assistant with the Denver Nuggets. He has also been an assistant at Arizona, Oregon, and the head coach at Metro State (won DII national titles in 2000 and 2002).

• I have heard that New Heights Athletic Director Kimani Young is involved with a spot on Richard Pitino’s staff at Florida International. Young has been with New Heights in NYC since 2006 and has spent time on the staff at St. John’s under Norm Roberts. He scored 1,023 points in three seasons playing for Don Haskins at UTEP.

• I can confirm that Lincoln College (IL) has hired Pat Lepper as the new head basketball coach. Lepper was the associate head coach at John Wood CC (IL) last season. He replaces Kirk Whiteman, who resigned after compiling a 108-30 record and two NJCAA Division II national championships in four seasons.

• We reported a few weeks ago that Kentucky HS coaching legend Tim Riley was in the mix at Brescia University (KY). I’ve heard from a great source that he is still considered the leader, but may not be able to come to an agreement with the school. Apparently there are some stumbling blocks over certain negotiations. If the two sides are unable to come to an agreement, I have heard that former KY HS star and WVU alum Elton Scott, and longtime AAU guy Wilson Phishman are considered to be the two favorites.

• Vince Turner, the former head Coach at the University of Michigan-Dearborn has taken a HS gig. He has become the head coach at Northwest HS (TN).

• A jury in New York found that Matt Brady, former head men’s basketball coach for Marist College (and current head coach at James Madison), breached his contract in leaving but the college sustained no monetary damages.
