Daily Dirt – 4/30/12

Still recovering from the HoopDirt / WHoopDirt event on Saturday. It’s tough getting old, but in the words of my man Toby Keith, “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.” We had a great (long) night, and I appreciate all of the kind words that were sent to us by our readers over the weekend! Here are some things that I’ve heard today…

A 4:00pm (CT) news conference has been scheduled at Southern Mississippi where they will name Morehead State’s Donnie Tyndall as their new head coach. I will publish some pretty solid Morehead State names later this afternoon.

Multiple sources are reporting that Georgetown assistant Robert Kirby is close to joining Johnny Jones new staff at LSU. Before joining the Hoyas staff two seasons ago, Kirby spent 12-seasons as an assistant at Mississippi State.

It sounds like Xavier assistant Kareem Richardson will be Richard Pitino’s replacement at Louisville. Richardson was a finalist for the Eastern Illinois job this past season, and was rumored to be involved with an assistant spot at Louisville last year. He has also worked at UMKC, Evansville, Indiana State, Wright State and Indianapolis. The official announcement is expected to be made this afternoon.

I have heard that Austin Peay assistant Scott Coombs is involved with the head coaching position at Martin Methodist. Coombs has spent the past 16 years at APU – as a player, in an ops role, and as an assistant for the past 13 seasons. Word is that he has already interviewed and many believe that he is the leading candidate here.

I can confirm that Sam Waniewski will become the new video coordinator at Colorado State. He was Larry Eustachy’s graduate assistant last season at Southern Mississippi. Before Southern Miss, he was on the staff at Concordia University (NE).

From a great source….Matt Bowen (head coach Bemidji State) and Jeff Rutter (DBO Iowa State) are the finalists for the University of Minnesota-Duluth job. I have heard that they will both interview on Monday the committee wants to make a decision by Friday. Bowen led his squad to 22-wins this past season and won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) title this past season (UMD is also in the NSIC). He has been at Bemidji St. for the past six seasons and has also worked at UAB and Valparaiso. Rutter has been at Iowa State for the past seven seasons in various roles. He has also been the head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside (1996-2003) and an assistant at Northern Iowa.

Last week, I reported that UMHB assistant Jimmy Smith was a finalist for the Schreiner job (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/e71ff79c/daily-dirt-ii-4-27-12/…). I am now hearing from the same source that he has been offered the job. We’ll keep following this one until it becomes official.
