Daily Dirt – 4/17/12

Today’s "dirt"….

According to multiple sources, West Virginia assistant Jerrod Calhoun will become the head coach at Fairmont State (WVa.) Calhoun has been on Bob Huggins staff since 2007 – serving as the DBO for four seasons before being promoted last spring. The official announcement is expected at 4:00 today.

Look for former Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart to join Bob Huggins staff if and when Calhoun departs. Everhart is a West Virginia native and good friends with Huggins. When Everhart was the head coach at Northeastern, he moved on of his assistants – Frank Martin – on to work with Huggins at Cincinnati (turned out pretty well for Martin). Everhart has been a DI head coach for 18 seasons – McNeese St, Northeastern, Duquesne (273–261).

I feel pretty comfortable with my list of candidates at Southern Miss (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/a8eaec95/southern-mississippi-rumor…) – now, according to a big-time source, I can add another name to the list. It appears that Wichita State assistant Greg Heiar is in the mix. Before coming to WSU last spring, he served under Larry Eustachy at So. Miss for two seasons. He has had great success as a head coach – in five seasons at the helm at Chipola, he went 164-15 (and was the Panhandle Conference Coach of the Year in each of those five seasons). I’ve heard a decision could be made here by the end of the week.

It sounds like Louuisville DBO Mark Lieberman may join Richard Pitino’s staff at Florida International. Lieberman in a FIU grad (’95) and also served as the head coach at Monsignor Pace High School in Miami for 13 seasons. He has been at Louisville for the past two years. I’ve also heard that U of L assistant video coordinator Casey Stanley could also be headed to FIU in what sounds like an operations role. Stanley previously worked as the coordinator of basketball operations at Seton Hall under Kevin Willard.

Staying in Florida….multiple sources are reporting the Florida Atlantic head coach Mike Jarvis has greed to a three-year contract extension. It sounds like the deal will be around $225,000 with pay increases for the assistants as well. Jarvis’ contract was due to expire any day, so it looks like this comes at just the right time.

Christopher Simmons, who spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant at Greenville College (IL) has been named as the head coach at Union HS (MO). He is a Missouri native who played at William Jewel College (MO) for two seasons, and GC for two.
