Interesting article here by CBSSports.com’s Greg Doyel. Much has been made of the Bruce Pearl situation, and Doyel makes some good points – I can’t say I disagree with him. Pearl is a great coach, and an even better personality, but he got caught! I’m very curious as to how this will play out – especially with October 15th creeping up on us. On a side note, former UIC head coach Jimmy Collins must feel a little vindication. It was 20+ years ago when Pearl (then an assistant at Iowa) turned Collins (an assistant at Illinois) in over the illegal recruitment of Deon Thomas. Pearl made a recording of Thomas and handed it over to the NCAA causing a 16-month investigation into the program at Illinois. While the Illinois program was hit hard with sanctions, Collins was basically cleared. Here’s a pretty good article from USA Today about what happened.
