Frostburg State Names Maurice Williams Assistant

Frostburg State head men’s basketball coach Webb Hatch has announced that Maurice Williams will be making a return to the sideline for the 2015-16 season as the program’s top assistant coach.

Williams is no stranger to Frostburg after playing for the Bobcat men’s team from 2009-12. As a senior in ’12, Williams became the program’s first All-Capital Athletic Conference selection after being named to the first team. A Columbus Ohio native, Williams led the CAC during his final year in scoring, offensive rebounding and free throw percentage. He was named team MVP and recorded six double-doubles.

“I am excited and humbled to return to FSU as an assistant coach,” said Williams. “This place was very special to me as a player and even more now as a coach. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to work with coach Hatch again and excited to bring a type of energy that will be contagious to these young men!”

Williams returns to FSU after spending the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at Salisbury University. The Sea Gulls won the CAC Tournament Title for the first time since the 1995-96 season and defeated Eastern Connecticut State (66-54) in the NCAA Tournament.

After Salisbury, Williams coached briefly at St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md., before returning to Frostburg.

Williams was an assistant head coach at Eastern University for two years from 2012-14. During his tenure, the team improved its win total in the 2013-14 season and finished as the most improved team in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Williams had a hand in recruiting, video coordinating and he served as the head coach of the JV team. Williams also brings experience at the junior college level as a volunteer assistant at Richard Bland College in Petersburg, Virginia.

Williams graduated from Frostburg State with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and a minor in coaching. He earned his master’s degree in sports science in Coaching Education from The Ohio University.

Williams replaces eight-year assistant coach Sean Brown, who recently was named the head women’s basketball coach at Pitt-Bradford.
