Neil Dixon has been named the new Head Coach for the Hurricanes Men’s Basketball team. Dixon has spent the last two seasons as the assistant under Mark Vanderslice who just recently accepted the Head Coach position at USC Aiken. While serving as assistant coach, Dixon was also the head coach of the junior varsity team at Louisburg College. Dixon assisted in all areas of the program including: primarily recruiting the state of Virginia, post development, strength program, monitor study hall and daily basketball operations assigned by the head coach.
Prior to coming to Louisburg, Dixon spent time as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV. At Fairmont State, Dixon was part of a staff that won the most games of any first year staff and had the single greatest win turnaround in school history going from eight to 23. They also made an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Dixon went to Fairmont State after spending the 2011-2012 season as an assistant at NAIA Division I WVU Tech. He played an integral role in helping lead the Golden Bears to the Mid-South regular season title and their best season in over a decade.
A native of Lewisburg, West Virginia, Dixon earned a degree in Physical and Health Education from West Virginia University in 2006, and earned his master’s degree in Athletic Coaching Education from WVU in 2008.
Upon the hiring, Dixon had this to say, “I am honored to have been named head men’s basketball coach at Louisburg College. I would first like to thank Coach Mike Holloman, athletic director, and Dr. La Branche, President, for entrusting the program to me. I came to work at Louisburg as an assistant coach two summers ago and I immediately fell in love with Louisburg College and all it has to offer. It is truly a special place.”
Dixon is very excited to continue the success that the program has had the past five years under Vanderslice. The newly announced head coach said this in regards to his time at Louisburg, “I got the opportunity to learn from him (Vanderslice) over the past two seasons, but I am also excited to put my own stamp on the program.”
Athletic Director Mike Holloman said, “Neil has done an outstanding job during his two years at LC as an assistant coach and has been very instrumental in the program’s success during our last two seasons. We feel that his previous experiences have prepared him to be successful as the next Head Basketball Coach at Louisburg College. Coach Dixon knows the program, system, players and opponents which will make for a smooth transition into the leadership role.”
