University of West Alabama head men’s basketball coach, Allen Sharpe, has announced the promotion of assistant Nick Woodruff to Associate Head Coach. In addition, Sharpe has announced the hiring of Garrison Boyd as the Graduate Assistant Coach entering the 2015-2016 season.
“The most important characteristic for any assistant is “loyalty”, said Sharpe. “Nick’s loyalty to our program, our players and myself is never in question. “After five successful seasons together Nick is very deserving of the promotion. He gives me the opportunity to focus solely on coaching our team.”
Although entering only his second season at UWA, Woodruff has spent a total of five seasons as assistant coach under Allen Sharpe serving as the Assistant Coach for four seasons at the University of Arkansas-Monticello prior to arriving in Livingston.
The new title comes following a record-breaking season by the Tigers. During his first season at UWA, Woodruff helped to lead the program to its most single season wins of 22, breaking the previous best of 21 games set in 1970-71, as well as the most single season Gulf South Conference wins of 15. The Tigers finished the year as regular season GSC co-champions at 15-7 in the league, earning their first ever consecutive bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament where they finished 22-12 overall.
Garrison Boyd joins West Alabama by way of Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tenn. where he spent the past two seasons as the men’s basketball student assistant before earning his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in May.
“We feel Garrison is a great fit for our program,” Sharpe said. “His years at Tennessee Tech have prepared him to enter the coaching profession. He will play a major role for our basketball program for the upcoming season.”
Boyd originates from Nashville, Tenn. where he played at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy.
